Aberdeen Harbour Arrivals

This is a test Wikibase instance set up by Code the City an Aberdeen-based charity which uses tech and data for civic good.

The purpose of this test instance is two-fold.

1. to gain familiarity with Wikibase as a possibile repository for data which we create or gather as part of our hack weekends and other activity 2. to ascertain if we can use the Wikibase platform as a home for data from a mass-transcription exercise carried out over a short period of the pandemic as described below.

About the Harbour Arrivals project

The project write up can be found in this blog post and is continued in this blog post.

In summary, volunteers transcribed 28,792 records from registers of Aberdeen Harbour Board covering 1914 to 1920. That data is still sitting in Google Sheets and needs to be exposed as structured open data.

A former Code The City trustee, Pauline Cairns imported the data and created this | Power BI visualisation of the data.
